Special Cruising Courses

J/World Sailing conducts special cruising events designed to provide both exceptional adventures, and the perfect opportunity to advance sailing and cruising skills.  Courses are conducted on well found and equipped vessels by licensed US Coast Guard Captains and certified J/World instructors.  This is hands-on, real world experience.  If you have dreamed of the cruising lifestyle there is no better way to prepare for broader horizons.

Hawaii to California Offshore Cruise

Each Summer, J World Sailing School hosts a truly special offshore adventure for sailors looking to learn the intricacies of offshore passage making on an actual adventure.  Departing in early August, we will be sailing across the Eastern Pacific from Hawaii to San Francisco.

This provides an excellent opportunity to rack up some serious sea miles offshore under the watchful eyes of our professional staff.  Everyone is an active member of the crew, and gets to share in all the responsibilities of onboard life.  From navigating to standing watches, from trimming sails to helming the boat, you can learn by doing.  The direct course is some 2000 miles, but your trip will take you along the sailing ship route, heading north from the islands until you can cut across the top of the Pacific High.  This will get you into the steady West and Northwest winds which will be your ticket for the final ride home.

The trip is expected to take about 14 days, but it could (of course) be a bit longer or shorter, depending on the conditions.  Please contact us for further information.

Mexico Cruises

J/World Sailing School runs various cruising itineraries along the Western coast of Mexico and the Sea of Cortez.  Using our office in Puerto Vallarta in the beautiful Banderas Bay as our home base, we can provide a wide range of experiences.  Remote islands, sleepy shore-side villages, stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and top tier sailing conditions make this one of the best places in the world for cruising.

A J/World Sailing School instructor will be with you the whole time on these liveaboard cruising courses, and you may earn your US Sailing Bareboat Cruising certification.  We’ll make sure that you get the experience, knowledge, and confidence to go it alone next time!  Since we keep the student to instructor ratio very low to make sure you get lots of personal attention.

The Baja-Ha-Ha

For most West Coast sailors and fans of the Latitude 38 Magazine worldwide, the Baja Ha-Ha needs little introduction…  but for the rest of you, be assured this is one great event.

The Baja-Ha-Ha, now in its 23rd year (wow!), is a cruiser’s rally from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas which marks the beginning of the winter season in the warmer regions of Mexico.  Pretty much all comers are welcome, and the fleet regularly includes boats from 20 to 80 feet, from racers to cruisers to whatever tickles your fancy!  The camaraderie and friendliness of the group is renowned, and the success of the event is clear:  In the last running, some 150 boats participated!

The Baja-Ha-Ha fleet leaves San Diego in late October of every year.  There are two stops along the Pacific coast of Mexico designed to let crews rest and relax, enjoy the local scenery and culture, and intermingle in well organized beachside events.  To learn more about the Baja-Ha-Ha, visit their site here.

Testimonials

We had an absolutely fantastic time and achieved one of my life long goals – learning to sail!  The Instructors were truly great and we appreciated their very professional and friendly teaching style.  We’ll be back for sure!  Thank you for a great experience, J/World. Please send our regards to everyone….

D & ALearn to Sail, September 2007

Just wanted to say thank you for a great week taking the Performance Cruising class at J/World. Sailing the J80 was mucho fun and that J105 is a rocket!  Both of my instructors are super talented and I definitely learned more in that one week than I have in quite a while.  I’ll be in touch to do more sailing with J/World!

J.K.Performance Cruising, July 2008

I wanted to thank you for a wonderful trip and the experience of a lifetime. I was and remain extremely impressed with all the preparation and hard work that you put in to make this trip a success. I took from this experience not only a great deal of knowledge on ocean sailing, but also increased confidence in my ability as a sailor.

M.C.Pacific Cup, 2008

[Our instructor] did an incredible job of ensuring that we both had a positive experience. I have been an educator for almost 30 years. Currently I am Superintendent of Schools for a jurisdiction of over 10,000 students with 1050 staff. I can assure you that [our J/World instructor] is a natural teacher with a broad range of skills.

P. & J. L. Learn to Sail, January 2013

I just wanted to take a minute to express my appreciation for this weeks class, and to let you know I was really impressed with [my instructors]. You have a great team there!  I certainly got everything I’d hoped for… and more. The J/80 was a blast, and the time on my own boat was invaluable. The Friday race was the perfect end to an excellent week…

B.W.Race Week & Private Coaching, August, 2008

Absolutely exceeded my expectations in every dimension. The boats were exceptional… new modern and in good shape. The instructors were awesome. It was hard to believe you could get that level of experience and accomplishment and at the same time have great teachers. Thanks you J/World Team!

H.H.Learn to Sail, October 2008

As someone who’s been teaching and evaluating teachers for a quarter of a century, I’m writing to tell your instructor is one of the best I’ve seen. He’s tremendously skilled at communicating knowledge and also has the rare talent of being able to tell what his students do and don’t understand.
