Mexico Cruising Courses

Now booking Live Aboard courses and adventures for the winter cruising season in Puerto Vallarta!

J/World Sailing School runs various cruising itineraries along the Western coast of Mexico, the Sea of Cortez, and Baja California.  Using our office in Puerto Vallarta in the beautiful Banderas Bay as our home base, we can provide a wide range of experiences.  Remote islands, sleepy shore-side villages, stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and top tier sailing conditions make this one of the best places in the world for cruising.

A J/World Sailing School instructor will be with you the whole time on these liveaboard cruising courses, and you may earn your US Sailing Bareboat Cruising certification.  We’ll make sure that you get the experience, knowledge, and confidence to go it alone next time!  Since we keep the student to instructor ratio very low to make sure you get lots of personal attention.

Here is a list of some of the options available, but there are many more, so feel free to contact us with details regarding your goals and we will be happy to structure a customized experience.

Two Day Quick Trip

If time is tight, don’t worry at all, we can still help you get your sailing fix!  You will start off at the J/World Puerto Vallarta facility in the Paradise Village Resort.  After a boat orientation, you will head out into Bandras Bay and over to either beautiful Punta Mita to the north, or the sleepy village of Yelapa to the south.  It’s a short sail to either, so you will make it there with time to enjoy a sunset swim in tropical waters, and maybe dinner ashore?

Morning is a great time to get a bit of kayak or SUP paddling in, so start day two with a splash of warm water and sunshine!  After breakfast you’ll weigh anchor and turn downwind, taking advantage of the building seabreeze to get you back for an afternoon/evening arrival in Paradise.

At anchor off Yelapa
Sunset in Mexico

Three Day Getaway

A three day cruise in Banderas Bay will enable you to add Yelapa AND Punta Mita to the float plan.  Chose a three day cruise, and you won’t have to chose between the two!

Or maybe you want to venture a bit farther away?  After the boat orientation on day 1, you can make the 40 mile trip up the coast to Rincon de Guayabitos, home of Coral Island.  You will want to spend day two at anchor there.  Some snorkeling, kayaking, and exploring might be in order…  and of course further instruction.  Learn to cruise by cruising!

Day three will be the downwind sail home, around Punta Mita and into Banderas Bay.  There are usually plenty of whales, sea turtles, and dolphins to spy on!

Five Day Liveaboard

The five day course enables us to cover a wide range of topics in great detail.  If you really want to learn a lot and master the US Sailing Bareboat Cruising curriculum, you will want to do five days (at a minimum) to allow time to do all the course material justice and get plenty of hands-on experience.  For full details on the curriculum, visit this page.

With this option, we get to wander a bit further from home base.  Chacala, Coral Island, San Blas, and Isla Isabella to the north are all options.  To the south the Costallegre beckons with Chamela Bay and Cayeres.  You will have at least one overnight passage and be able to explore multiple ports-of-call.

Seven Day and Extended Adventures

So for those committed to a real adventure, our seven day courses offer up the opportunity to totally immerse oneself in the cruising adventure.  Our cruise between Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas is a wonderful passage with multiple stops along both the mainland and Baja coasts, with the option of a stop at Isla Isabella, a remote island in the Sea of Cortez teeming with wildlife.

Completion of this course can earn the US Sailing Bareboat Cruising certification.  For additional details about what we cover during this trip, see our Liveaboard Cruising course details.

Testimonials

We had an absolutely fantastic time and achieved one of my life long goals – learning to sail!  The Instructors were truly great and we appreciated their very professional and friendly teaching style.  We’ll be back for sure!  Thank you for a great experience, J/World. Please send our regards to everyone….

D & ALearn to Sail, September 2007

Just wanted to say thank you for a great week taking the Performance Cruising class at J/World. Sailing the J80 was mucho fun and that J105 is a rocket!  Both of my instructors are super talented and I definitely learned more in that one week than I have in quite a while.  I’ll be in touch to do more sailing with J/World!

J.K.Performance Cruising, July 2008

I wanted to thank you for a wonderful trip and the experience of a lifetime. I was and remain extremely impressed with all the preparation and hard work that you put in to make this trip a success. I took from this experience not only a great deal of knowledge on ocean sailing, but also increased confidence in my ability as a sailor.

M.C.Pacific Cup, 2008

[Our instructor] did an incredible job of ensuring that we both had a positive experience. I have been an educator for almost 30 years. Currently I am Superintendent of Schools for a jurisdiction of over 10,000 students with 1050 staff. I can assure you that [our J/World instructor] is a natural teacher with a broad range of skills.

P. & J. L. Learn to Sail, January 2013

I just wanted to take a minute to express my appreciation for this weeks class, and to let you know I was really impressed with [my instructors]. You have a great team there!  I certainly got everything I’d hoped for… and more. The J/80 was a blast, and the time on my own boat was invaluable. The Friday race was the perfect end to an excellent week…

B.W.Race Week & Private Coaching, August, 2008

Absolutely exceeded my expectations in every dimension. The boats were exceptional… new modern and in good shape. The instructors were awesome. It was hard to believe you could get that level of experience and accomplishment and at the same time have great teachers. Thanks you J/World Team!

H.H.Learn to Sail, October 2008

As someone who’s been teaching and evaluating teachers for a quarter of a century, I’m writing to tell your instructor is one of the best I’ve seen. He’s tremendously skilled at communicating knowledge and also has the rare talent of being able to tell what his students do and don’t understand.
